Robert Louis Adkins

Robert Louis Adkins, 91, of Marianna, FL died Thursday, March 22, 2018 at his residence. 

Robert was born in Jackson County, where he was a lifelong resident.  He enjoyed farming, carpentry work, hunting, and fishing.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, John Daniel and Mandy Adkins; his wife, Maxine Adkins and two brothers, Ted and Buster Adkins.

He is survived by his daughters, Gail Laramore and husband, Hub, of Marianna, Amanda Cuzzort of Bonifay, Bernice Carter and husband, Carl, of Alford, Brenda Sloan and husband, Donald, of Alford, Glenda Sloan and husband, William, of Greenwood, and Linda Laramore and husband, John, of Marianna; grandchildren, Jean Copeland, Boss and Angela O’bryan, Robert Carter, Brandy Sloan, William and Larry Sloan, Josephine Adkins, Sarah Laramore, and Russell Hansford; very special great grandchild, Cameron Hansford and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2018 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.  Interment will follow in the Hickory Level Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2018 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.

William “Harold” Davis

William “Harold” Davis, age 92 of Greenwood, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018 at his home.

Harold, a native of Jackson County, was born on August 18, 1925, to the late Andrew Neal and Mellie Ray Davis. He was a lifelong member of Greenwood Baptist Church where he was a Deacon Emeritus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Ruby Powell Davis, brothers Kenneth Davis and Jerrell Davis, and one sister Imogene Jones.

Harold is survived by his wife Virginia Davis, and his three daughters, Sherri Clunan (Sam) of Tallahassee, Pam Selman (David) of Tampa, and Lisa “Niki” Davis (Chuck) of Marianna; his second family, Virginia’s children, Jeff Sanders (Caroline) of Niceville, Jennifer Harkins (Allen) of Marianna, and Laura Hardy (Bill) of Auburn; four brothers Lamar Davis of Wewa, Max Davis of Crawfordville, and Norman Davis and Duane Davis of Lovedale.

He also survived by 18 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

Services for Harold will be held at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 27, 2018, in the Greenwood Baptist Church with his grandson Rev. Chase Clunan and Dr. Fred Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will host a reception in the church fellowship hall following the burial. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gideons International or to Greenwood Baptist Church.

Sean Nicholas Wyckoff

Sean Nicholas Wyckoff, 35, of Sneads, FL, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, March 23, 2018 at his residence.

Sean was born in Dothan, AL on July 26, 1982.  He played football at Sneads High School where he received the award for “best dressed” and graduated in the class of 2000.  He previously worked at Tech Care X-Ray as an x-ray technician.  Sean loved video games, spending time with his niece and nephews, enjoying time with friends and family, and he loved Florida State football more than life itself.  Sean was a loving and humble, gentle giant.  

He is survived by his parents, James and Jean Wyckoff; two brothers, Hugh Ryan Wyckoff and wife, Tara, and CJ Wyckoff and wife, Jessica; niece and nephews, Savannah, Liam, and Camden Wyckoff and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Salem Wesleyan Church.  Interment will follow in Salem Wesleyan Church Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2018 at Salem Wesleyan Church.

Claude M. Reese

Claude M. Reese

Claude M. Reese, 94, of Prattville, Alabama, formerly of Marianna Florida, died March 24, 2018.

He was born to the late Charles and Carrie Reese, June 3, 1923, in Hartsville, Tennessee. After graduating from Hendersonville High School, Claude trained and served as a flight instructor during WWII. In 1945 he married Frances (Becky) Shivel.  

After his time in the service, he continued as a flight instructor at Graham Aviation in Marianna, Florida. He went on to create Reese Construction Co. in Mariana.

Upon his retirement he pursued his interests in woodworking, flying and traveling. He had a keen interest in history and preservation and helped establish the Jackson County Historic Commission in 1969. Alongside his family, he spent six years restoring an antebellum house in Greenwood, Florida, known as Great Oaks. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and served as an elder and teacher throughout his adult life.

When asked what made him happy, he replied ‘Knowing that I have done a job to the best of my ability’.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Becky Reese, brother Peyton Reese, daughter Claudia Reese and granddaughter Carrie Holton.

Claude is survived by three daughters, Rebecca (Becky) Holton of Prattville Al., Priscilla Duva (Tony) of Roswell Ga., and Rachel Reese (Dale Palmer) of Asheville, NC.; sister Cecil Norman of Bowling Green, Ky.; brother Clem Reese of Tullahoma, Tn.; grandchildren Travis Holton (Susan) of Wewahitchka, Fl., and Erin Meade (Tim) of Prattville, Al.; and three great grandchildren: Allison and Carrington Meade and Lee Holton.

A service will be held April 8 at 2 p.m. at Caverns Road Church of Christ in Marianna, Florida. A reception will take place afterwards in the fellowship hall. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Jackson County Historic Society, Faulkner University in Montgomery, Al. or your local Hospice.

Mr. Elliott Bess, of Marianna, FL, transitioned from life temporal to life eternal on Sunday, March 25, 2018 in Bay Medical Covenant Hospice, Panama City, FL.

Graveside service will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Rose African Methodist Episcopal Church St. Rose Cemetery 660 Holmes Court Grand Ridge, FL 32442 with Rev. Linda Nickles Dukes Pastor, Rev. Nicholas Curry Officiating.

Sidney P. Hall, Jr. 83, of Malone, died Monday, March 26, 2018 at his residence.

Sidney was born April 29, 1934 to the late Sidney Sr. and Ethel Herring Hall. He was a native and lifelong resident of Malone, FL. Sidney worked for the Jackson County School system as an educator where he had taught at Sneads High School and Malone High School. Sidney farmed for many years and was the owner and operator at Hall Roofing Company where he later retired. He was a member and deacon of Friendship Baptist Church. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and running dogs. He especially enjoyed spending time with all of his family and friends at the family hunting camp.

He was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife, Jean Broome Hall.

Sidney was survived by his sons, Andy Hall and wife, Laura of Marianna, John Hall of Malone; daughters, Angela Jones and husband, Jimmy of Malone and Melanie Ditty and husband, Jacky of Greenwood; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Friendship Baptist Church with Revs. Jerry Robertson & Danny Sumerlin officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to funeral services at the church.

The family would like to express a very special thank you to the caregivers at Emerald Coast Hospice along with Vickie Fowler, Gail Hall, and the Traveling Angels.

LulaMae Stanford George, 79, of Marianna, Fl died Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Marianna Health and Rehabilitation Center.

LulaMae was born Sept.9th 1939 to Frances Holcomb Stanford and Samuel J Stanford in Salem, Il. On Jan 16th, 1957 she married Richard W. Arning who preceded her in death on Dec 2nd, 1973. On Oct 16th, 1977 she married Arthur Dean George who preceded her in death on Dec 17th, 2017

She was also preceded in death by her parents and son, Michael W. Arning. 

She is survived by her children, Becky (Bo) Bealor, Steve Arning, Martha Rolph, Cara (Tim) Edwards and Corey George, 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2018 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel. Interment will follow in Dykes Cemetery with James and Sikes Funeral Home Directing.

Clara Beggs Waters

Clara Beggs Waters

Clara Beggs Waters was born on October 22, 1936 in Vienna, Illinois, and passed March 24, 2018 at Jackson Hospital in Marianna, Florida.

She is preceded in death by her husband of almost 61 years, Roger Owen Waters; her parents, Ford and Faye Beggs; sister, Cora Sue Beggs Snell; and brother-in-law, James Snell.

She is survived by her brother, Joe Beggs (Sheryl) of Buncombe, Illinois.  She is also survived by her children, Katherine Fay Waters Arbona, Janice Kay Waters Rabon (Carl), and Douglas Roger Waters and his wife, Kathy Scott Waters.  She was known as “Granny” to her grandchildren, Gregory Brent Arbona (Stephanie), Jennifer Ann Tipton (Shane), Stephanie Brooke Mathis (Jake), Amber Celeste Arbona, and Douglas Blake Waters (Grace).  She was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren, Hannah Faith Arbona, Isabella Maria Arbona, Jade Elizabeth Tipton, Sarah Grace Mathis, Clara Kate Mathis, Genevieve DuBray, Violette Amara Arbona, Veda Sage Tipton, and Anna-Claire Waters.  Clara will also be missed by her four-legged companions, Ladybug and Dolly.

Clara grew up on the family farm in the southern Illinois community of Buncombe. She attended Southern Illinois University majoring in Elementary Education.  She came home and taught one year in a one-room schoolhouse grades kindergarten through 12th grade.  She soon realized that teaching wasn’t for her and moved to Chicago with a friend.  There she got a job at Chicago State Hospital as a clerk-secretary.  This is where she met a handsome young firefighter, her beloved Roger.  They married in July of 1956. They bought their first home in a suburb of Chicago in Wheeling, Illinois where they raised their family. 

Clara was happy as a full-time housewife and mother until her children were in high school, then she reentered the work force.  She worked for several companies, before becoming the technical processor for the Indian Trails Public Library in Wheeling, Illinois.

After Roger’s retirement from the Winnetka Fire Department, Roger and Clara moved to the panhandle of Florida where they had spent many family spring break vacations.  They bought their dream home on a 40-acre gentleman’s farm with a few head of cattle and a vegetable garden. 

After moving, Clara was employed by Northwest Florida Farm Credit Service as an executive assistant to the president.  She retired in 1992 with 15 years of service.  She later worked part-time at Town & Country Feed and Seed.  She was affectionately known as the “Seed and Chick Lady”.

Clara enjoyed her cows, sewing, gardening, traveling and camping with her family.  In her later years, Clara loved working in her yard, taking care of her home and doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Clara was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Marianna, Florida.

Arrangements are being made under the direction of James & Sikes Funeral Home, Marianna, FL for a private family ceremony.

Eunice Altman

Mrs. Eunice Altman, of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at her residence in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.  She was 97 years old. 

Eunice was born on December 2, 1920 to the late Lee Benjamin Riley and Lola Brown in Vernon, Florida.  She was a faithful member of Hollywood Church of God In Christ serving until her health failed her. 

She is survived by her sister: Mary Williams Riley of Cleveland, Ohio; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Eunice’s Life will be held 11 AM CST, Saturday, March 31, 2018 from the sanctuary of the Hollywood Church of God In Christ with Supt. Willie Sheffield, Pastor/Officiating.  Committal Services will follow in the Beal Memorial Cemetery, all of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida with Cooper Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida, directing.

Gail Goodwin Griggs

Gail Goodwin Griggs early Saturday morning, March 24, 2018, surrounded by a host of family, slipped from this world. 

Gail was born in Birmingham, Alabama on March 10, 1935. She graduated from Marianna High School, Chipola College, The University of West Florida, and Valdosta State College. Gail taught both elementary and high school and served as principal of Tift County High School for many years. In 1997, after retiring, she and her husband, Dr. Eddie M. Griggs moved to Silver Lake near Marianna to be closer to the children.

Some other realm is much richer and this one much poorer indeed, due to this loss. She loved everyone and was always glad to help anyone. She never complained about life's bumps and bruises. She will be missed beyond measure and her life will seldom come this way again.

She is preceded in death by her mother, father, and brother.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Eddie M. Griggs; two sons, Alan and Michael Braxton; one daughter, Bunny and son-in-law, Butch Odom; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Carolyn Goodwin; step- daughter, Gayle Marie Griggs-Kurian; grandchildren, April Alday and husband, Joseph, Natacha Phillips and husband, Ken, Ben Odom and wife, Amanda; great grandchildren, Beau and Juliette Alday, Audra and Trett Phillips, and Eleanor and Oliver Odom, all of Marianna. 

A service of remembrance will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2018 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.

Memorialization will be by cremation with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Spence H. Coley age 83 of Cottondale passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2018 in Marianna. He was born in Jackson County to the late James Alfred and Georgia Bennett Coley.  Mr. Coley retired from International Harvester after 30 years as a machinist. He was a loving brother, father, uncle and friend and will be greatly missed.

Carrie Bell Spears

Ms. Carrie Bell Spears, 81, a lifelong resident of Sneads, Florida passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Wednesday, March 28, 2018 in Tallahassee, FL.  She cherished attending church and was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church in Sneads. Carrie was a faithful homemaker, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother.  She loved her family dearly and considered her children and grandchildren to be her greatest accomplishments.  Carrie enjoyed flower gardening, playing cards and board games with her family and friends, fishing, shopping at Walmart but most of all helping others in need. She will be deeply missed by her family, and many friends made throughout the years.

Carrie is survived by two sons, Stephen Spears (Amanda) of Cottondale, FL and Kenneth Spears (JoAnn) of Tallahassee, FL; three sisters, Rosalee Pitts of Aucilla, FL, Lois Dudley (Bobby) of Sneads, FL and Irene Riddles (Charles) of Sneads, FL; two brothers, Jay Davis, Jr (Mary) of Marianna, FL and Bobby Davis of Chattahoochee, FL; two grandchildren, Kenneth Spears, Jr (Kristin) and Kristen Thelen (Eric) and three great grandchildren, Emma, Kenneth III, and Hudson.

Carrie was preceded in death by her parents Jay Davis, Sr and Martha Davis; four siblings, Mildred Roberts, James Simmons, Mary Bailey and Elizabeth Sligh; and one son, Audie Jack Spears, Jr.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 30, 2018 at McAlpin Funeral Home in Sneads, FL from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM CST.  Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 11:00 AM CST in the McAlpin Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Jackson and Rev. Tim Tamblen officiating.  Interment will follow in Pope Cemetery with McAlpin Funeral Home directing.

James Edward Land

James Edward Land age 86 of Marianna, passed away at his home on Thursday, March 29, 2018 surrounded by family. He was born on May 28, 1931 in rural Holmes County to the late William E. and Mattie McClain Land. James was the third born of seven children. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edna Merle O’Neal Land, son James Randall Land, brother Charles H. Land, sister and brother-in-law Myrt Land Stewart and husband Lamar, sister and brother-in-law Dorothy Land Wefel and husband Bob; brothers-in-law Bill Bauldree, and Rev. B. Gene Bird, great granddaughter Madison Fountain.

James is survived by his children; Patricia Land Bray and husband Donnie, Richard Edward Land and wife Mary, Nancy Meadows and husband Joey, sisters Clara Land Bauldree, Norma Land Bird, and Peggy Land Aldridge and husband Wayne, sister-in-law Faye Land, 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter, numerous nieces and nephews, and special friend Buddy Porter.

Services for James will be held at 10:00 A.M., on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Eastside Baptist Church with Nephew Pastor Lee Windsor officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, March 30, 2018 at Marianna Chapel Funeral.

Sherry Brown

Sherry Brown, 68, of Marianna, died Saturday, March 31, 2018 in Noland Hospital in Dothan, AL.

A native of Marianna, FL, Mrs. Brown had resided in Jackson County for the majority of her life. She was originally employed with Huff Volkswagen, then Harrison Buick Chevrolet before being hired by the late Olin Brewer in 1976 at the Jackson County Tax Collector’s Office. Mrs. Brown started on the front line and worked her way up throughout the years until she was promoted to Fiscal Manager and then being assigned the Assistant Tax Collector under Betty F. Hatcher. She served this position for many years before running and being elected as the Jackson County Tax Collector in 2004. Mrs. Brown took Great Honor and Pride in serving the citizens of Jackson County for over 40 years until December 30th, 2016 upon her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Lois Adkins; paternal grandparents, Wesely and Neely Adkins; maternal grandparents Hendrix and Stella Daniels.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 50 years, Wayne Brown; one son, Michael Brown and wife, Anitra Brown; one granddaughter, Madison Brown all of Marianna; one sister, Patricia Browder of Tallahassee. 

Funeral services will be 12 noon, Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.  Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until funeral time, Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Maddox Chapel.

Mrs. Edna M. Snyder went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 30, 2018 at Jackson Hospital. She lived with her son, Robert, until her passing.

She is survived by her daughter, Dolores Marsh of Hamburg, NJ; her son, Robert H. Snyder and wife, Jo Ann, of Marianna; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

The burial will take place at a later date in New Jersey.

Judy Elaine McClendon age 68 of Altha, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2018 in Tallahassee. She was a native of Jackson County, but had spent most of her life in Altha. Judy was free spirited who loved the beach, her kids. Grandkids, and was an amazing cook.

She was preceded in death by her parents John T. and Eunice Bessie Faircloth McClendon, brothers David, Larry and Russell McClendon, sisters Doris “Meryl” Dadico, Sarah Ann McAlpin, Margaret Edwards, and Angeline Durden.

Judy is survived by her two sons; Rodney Hamilton and wife Sarah of Crawfordville, FL, and Dustin Brothers of Tallahassee, FL, three sisters Carolyn Harrison of Chipley, FL, Jane McClendon of Altha, FL, and Debbie Killion and husband Rob of Juniper, FL. She is also survived by her three grandchildren Austin Hamilton, Chessa Brothers, and Bryn Brothers.

A memorial service for Judy will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.

Lundelius, 91, a resident of Sneads, Florida for 15 years, passed away Friday, March 31, 2018, in Marianna, Florida after a brief illness.  She moved to Sneads from Homestead, Florida and was a homemaker for her beloved family, a master seamstress and fabulous cook.  Midori was an animal lover and loyal friend.  She always found ways to do kind things for others and considered her friends as her family.  Midori will be deeply missed by her loving family and friends.

She is survived by two daughters, Naomi Torrese of Coral Gables, Florida and Debra Core and her husband John IV of Dunn, North Carolina; four grandchildren, John Core, V and his wife Renee, Joshua Core, Shelby Torrese, Fiona Torrese and one great grandchild John Core, VI.

Ms. Bridgette Michelle Sorey age 51of Campbellton, FL passed away Thursday March 29th at her residence. 

Funeral services will be held 11a.m. Saturday April 7th 2018 at New Bethel C.M.E. Church located 2487 Hwy 2 Campbellton, FL. with the Reverend Freeman Walker Sr. and Barbara Campbell officiating and with Mckinnie Funeral Home of Campbellton, FL. directing. Visitation will be held 5 to 7p.m. Friday April 6th at the Mckinnie Funeral Home Chapel located 5304 Bowden Hill Rd Campbellton, FL

Bridgette Michelle Sorey was born November 28, 1966 in Jacob City, FL to Alice Glen Sorey and the Late Matthew James Pittman. She was of the Methodist faith and a member of Friendship C.M.E. Church in Campbellton, FL. She graduated from Washington County Vocational School and worked as a CNA for many years.

Leta Ramona Grimes Russell, 83, of Marianna, died Sunday, April 1, 2018 at her residence. 

Mrs. Russell was born September 27, 1934 in Crawfordville, Florida to Joy Franklin Grimes, Sr. and Jessie Robinson Grimes. She was a graduate of Crawfordville High School and later married Rainey Gwynn Russell, Jr. on September 12, 1954. They lived in Tallahassee, Miami, Belle Glade, Jasper and Pensacola before settling in Marianna in 1965. She became a member of First Assembly of God in Marianna in 1967. She served in many capacities including member of the choir, Missionettes sponsor, and nursery teacher. From 1971-1994, Mrs. Russell was employed by Sprint Telephone Company as a customer service representative.  She also volunteered at Faith Health Clinic as the office manager for 14 years. Mrs. Russell loved her Lord, her family, and others.

Mrs. Russell is preceded in death by her parents, Joy Franklin Grimes, Sr. and Jessie Robinson Grimes; two brothers, Bill Grimes and Ray Grimes; one sister, Karen Grimes Hartsfield; one grandson, Ryan Hilton Russell.

Mrs. Russell is survived by her husband of 63 years, Rainey G. Russell, Jr.; one son, Raymond Russell and wife, Susan, of Blountstown; one daughter, Beverly Russell Raley and husband, David, of Webster; two brothers, C.J. Grimes and wife, June, of Phoenix City, AL and Frank Grimes and wife, Margaret, of Cottondale; one sister-in-law, Bernice Grimes of Marianna; one brother-in-law, Ardis Hartsfield of Eugene, Oregon; four grandchildren, Allison Raley Byers and husband, Jake, of Jacksonville, Kyle Russell and wife, Meagan, of Altha, Lauren Raley, of Lakeland, and Catherine Raley and husband, Josh Daughtry, of Orlando; two great grandchildren, Elizabeth Claire Byers, of Jacksonville and Julie Ann Russell, of Altha.

Funeral Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2018 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel with Reverends Charles Coley and David C. Raley officiating. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel in Marianna.
