Mr. James Pittman of Marianna, Florida transitioned from life temporal to life eternal on Saturday, April 6, 2019 in Signature Healthcare at the Courtyard. 

Funeral service for Mr. James Pittman was held on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 11:00  A.M. from the sanctuary of Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church in Marianna, Florida with Rev. Dwight Cockerham Sr. and Rev. Dr. Nelson Wilson, officiating.  

Interment was in the church cemetery with Vann Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.  

Mr. Pittman was in repose at the church from 10:00 A.M. until time for the service.  

A viewing was held on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.  at Vann Funeral Home.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories, a loving and devoted family:

4 Sisters: Florence Jones of Tallahassee, Florida; Jennie (L.E.) Hartsfield of Greenwood, Florida; Lucy Pittman of College Station, Texas and Earline (Charles) Paramore of Marianna, Florida

Joseph “Bill” Franklin, 69 of Grand Ridge died Friday, April 12, 2019 at his residence.

Mr. Franklin was born in Jackson Co, FL on June 21, 1949 to Huey and Lena Daniels Franklin. He spent all of his life in Jackson County. He spent many years working on Fiber Optic Cable and maintenance for Darby Construction. He enjoyed his job but in his spare time he loved to fish and would go every time he had the opportunity. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Huey and Lena Franklin; one brother, James Earl Franklin; two sisters, Vera Lou Franklin and Vernice Owens.

His survivors include his wife, Dessie Obert Franklin of Grand Ridge; two daughters, Crystal Franklin of Greenwood, and Kim Rushin of Grand Ridge; two sons, Patrick Wilkinson and wife, Reta of Sneads, and Tony Wilkinson and wife, Tina of Chattahoochee; two grandchildren, Madison School and Sydney Karl; one brother, Russell Franklin and three sisters, Esther Tharpe, Sally Branch, and Nita Kelly.

Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel with Reverend Chris Franklin officiating. Interment will follow at Carpenter Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The Family will receive friends, Monday, April 15, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.

Elton M. Register

Elton M. Register age 89 of Graceville, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2019 in Dothan, AL. Mr. Register was born on October 30, 1929 to the late Curtis and Louise Ivey Register.  He was a native of Graceville and proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Register and was retired from Department of Transportation after many years of service as a Civil Engineer, and was a member of Galilee Methodist Church.

Mr. Register was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ted Register, and Joe Register, his granddaughter Trish Watson.
He is survived by his loving wife Jeanette Register of Graceville, FL, daughters Rebecca Shelley of Graceville, FL, Jeannie Paul of Molino, FL, Susan Lane of Graceville, FL, and Janet Register of Cottondale, two sisters Millie Boggess of Greenville, KY, and Peggy Ming of Dothan, AL, twelve grandchildren, and eleven grandchildren.

Services for Mr. Register will be held at 10:00 AM, on Monday, April 15, 2019 in the Williams Funeral Home chapel with Pat Williams and Rev. Don Durham officiating. Interment will follow in the Galilee United Methodist Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until time of service.

Serving as Mr. Register’s pallbearers are J. Ryan Rennspies, Martin “Bubba” Lane, Clint Williams, Ken Shelley, Steven Shelley, Eli Shelley, Tiszon Sketo, and Madison Sketo.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital (501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105).

Travis Allen Bright, Sr.

Travis Allen Bright, Sr. ,59, of Marianna died Friday, April 12, 2019 at his home.

Travis was widely known in the tri-states area to be THE parts man from his years "behind the counter" at Swearingen Equipment Company.  His knowledge of farm equipment and anything mechanical was extensive.  His customers were his friends.  He never met a stranger. He was always willing to help and gave away more than just advice to anyone who needed it.  He told big stories loudly and laughed at the same volume.  He was an excellent writer and orator, winning several levels of the Optimist Club oratorical contest in his younger years. He regularly spoke on farm equipment safety after losing his right arm in a farm equipment accident. That heroic story being one of his best and most enthusiastic recantations. He passionately loved his children and his pride in them was widely known.  He willingly shared photos of his grandkids and bragged about how smart they were.  He cherished his mother and took good care of her, as she did him.  He loved his sister and regularly teased her about how she abused him until he got bigger than her. He loved deeply.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Courtney Elizabeth Bright and his father, Charley Travis Bright.

He is survived by his sons, Travis Allen Bright, Jr. (Tab) and wife Brittany of Pensacola, Chad Bright and wife, Brittany of Hartford, AL; sister, Kathy Bright Bass and husband, Bill of Lynn Haven; mother, Mary D. Bright of Marianna; four grandchildren, Madilyn Elizabeth Bright, Travis Allen Bright III, Emmalynn Elizabeth Bright and Luke James Bright; two nephews, Davis Dewitt Bass and William Atwater Bass, and one niece, Sarah Elizabeth Bass.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 14, 2019 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel with Rev. Luther Pumphrey officiating. Private Interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with James & Sikes Maddox Chapel directing.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm until service time.

Travis, like many,  struggled with a lifetime of addiction.  The family appreciates all of the years of support to Travis and each member of his family.  In honor of his passion for the men and women who struggled with him, and the organization who helped him confront his shortfalls, the family requests those who would like, to make contributions in memory of Travis Bright to: The Panama City Rescue Mission 609 Allen Avenue Panama City, FL. 32401.

Geraldine Dozier Corder

Geraldine Dozier Corder, 97, of Bascom, died Friday, April 12, 2019 in Bascom.

Geraldine was born on September 25, 1921 and was a native and life long resident of Bascom, FL. After  graduating from high school, she went to Mobile, AL and worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" welder on war ships during World War II. After the war, she returned to Florida and worked at Graham Air Base until it closed in 1960. She then became a full time homemaker, loved to travel and loved family gatherings.

She is preceded in death by husband, E.W. Corder; parents, Thomas and Trudie Dozier; one sister, Mary Greene Rogers and two sister in-laws, Lorene Tindel and Thelma Long.

Survivors include her daughter, Brenda Hatcher; son, Kenneth Corder and wife Alicia; grandchildren, Danellie Wilson, Jason Hatcher, Joshua Corder, Cameron Corder and Ethan Corder; four great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 3 P.M. Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at Bascom Baptist Cemetery in Bascom with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Mrs. Toreatha Joyce Hayes Mitchell, 60, of Greenwood, FL went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 12, 2019 at her home.

She was a native of Jackson County, FL and member of Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church of Marianna, Florida.

Precious memories will forever remain with her daughter, Martini Hayes; her mother:  Hattie Mae Hayes of Greenwood, Florida; sisters: Malisa Clark (Venson) of Greer, South Carolina and Deana Richardson (Paul) of Jacksonville, Florida; aunts: Mary Hall of Saint Petersburg, Florida, Nancy Johnson of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Reola Williams of Two Egg, Florida; nieces: Rita Jones of Tallahassee, Florida, Daisy Hayes of Huntsville, Alabama and Malia Richardson of Jacksonville, Florida; nephews: Xaiden Hayes, Xander Hayes and Xakyai Hayes all of Huntsville, Alabama, Morgan Jones and Kerwin Jones, Jr., both of Tallahassee, Florida; a host of other sorrowing relatives and friends

Visitation will be 3-6 PM, Friday, April 19, 2019 in the M. Sue & Rodney D. Pittman Memorial Chapel, 5441 Cooper Street, Graceville, FL.

Funeral services will be 11 AM, Saturday. April 20, 2019 at Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, 3695 Poplar Springs Rd, Marianna, FL with the Reverend Dwight D. Cockerham, Sr., pastor, officiating.

She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery under the directions of Christian Memorial Chapel of Graceville, Florida.

Donald "Don" Edward Ostrander

Donald “Don” Edward  Ostrander, 89, of Marianna, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2019 in Dothan, AL. Don was born in Florala, AL to the late Albert “Dutch” and Grace Ostrander and has lived in Marianna most of his life.

He was a veteran serving in the Marines during the Korean War,  and retired from being a master tile/carpet floorman. Later Don worked several years as a carrier for the Jackson County Floridan. He loved his family and also enjoyed fishing and dove hunting. Don was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Peggy Sue Ostrander Quinton,  brothers David Ostrander, Howard Ostrander, Guy Ostrander, and Lester Ostrander, sisters Ida Coleman, Murray Bowland, and Dorothy Dudley.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Dora Ostrander, son Berry (Lisa) Ostrander, step-granddaughter Crystal White, five step great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Don will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 18, 2019 in the Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Cook officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Faye Wiley Land, 78 of Bascom died Monday, April 15, 2019 at Southeast Healthcare in Dothan.

Ms. Land was born in the Bascom, FL community to the late Joseph Albert Wiley and Annie Lee Wiley on April 28, 1940. She spent most of her life in Bascom, FL. She was a faithful member of Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church and served as the secretary and treasurer for many years. She retired from the Florida Department of Children and Families as a supervisor. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Henry Land; one brother, Lowell Wiley and one granddaughter, Natalie Rohr.

She is survived by two daughters, Sonya Welch, of Jacksonville, Sabrina Rohr and husband, Stephen, of Dothan; two sons, Joseph Matthew Land and wife, Ceritha of Bascom, Jeffrey Land of Bascom; one brother, Lynwood Wiley of Lake Hamilton, FL; 14 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild; three sisters-in-law, Norma Bird, Clara Bauldree, and Peggy Aldridge and husband, Wayne, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, April 18, 2019 at Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church with Reverends Steven Welch and Henry McClain officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. 

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 17, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m. at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel in Marianna.

Jeanne Zimmerman Bevis, age 93, past from this life at the Northwest Florida Community Hospital, in Chipley FL, on Wednesday, April 10, 2019. She was born on December 20, 1925, to the late George and E. Louise Zimmerman, in Rochester, New York. Jeanne earned her living as an Administrative Associate for the Coca-Cola Company; she has also been a resident of the Chipley, FL, area since 1996, where she became a valued friend of the Chipley Library, and participant in the Chipley Women’s Club. 

Jeanne is preceded in death by both parents; her husband, Lawson Howard Bevis; and her son, Lawson Howard Bevis, Jr. She is survived by two daughters: Sally Bevis Holder of Chipley, FL; Cassandra “Sandy” Bevis Locke and husband, John B. Locke, of Talladega, AL; daughter-in-law, Valerie Bevis of Milton, FL; four grandchildren: Amy Elizabeth Locke, John Aaron Locke, Troy Lawson Bevis, and Rachel Marie Bevis; two great-granddaughters; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. 

A graveside funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. EST, Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Culley’s Meadowwood Memorial Park Cemetery, in Tallahassee, FL, with Reverend Tim Brigham officiating. The visitation will take place Wednesday, April 17, 2019 from 5:30-7:00 P.M. CST in the Brown Funeral Home Chapel, located in Chipley, FL.  Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Inez Holmes Wooden Davis of Sneads, Florida transitioned from life temporal to life eternal on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Davis retired from Florida State Hospital as a Unit Treatment and Rehabilitation Specialist. She was a member of True Holiness Church of Christ Written in Heaven. To know her was to love her.

Dennie Wright

Deacon Dennie Wright of Chipley, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on April 10, 2019 in the Southwest Alabama Medical Center of Dothan, Alabama.  He was 82 years old. 

Dennie was a devoted member of the Mt. Ararat First Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. H.G. McCollough.  He served on the Deacon Board and attended Sunday School and Sunday Service faithfully until his health began to fail him.  He was a handy man in the community for many years, willing to assist anybody that was in need.  

Dennie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Viola Boston Wright; son: Dennis Wright; and his daughter: Phyllis Wright. 

He leaves to cherish his memories his son: Richard Paul Wright of Chipley, Florida; one sister: Gail Hariston of Powhatan, Virgina; three brothers: William Henderson of Tallahassee, Florida, Haywood (Ava) Henderson of Springfield, Illinois, and Danny Wright of Washington, D.C.; along with a host of sisters & brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

A Celebration of Life will be held 11 AM CST, Saturday, April 20, 2019 from the sanctuary of the Mt. Ararat First Missionary Baptist Church of Chipley, Florida with Rev. Dr. H.G. McCollough, Pastor/Officiating.  Committal Service will follow in the Southside Cemetery of Chipley, Florida with Cooper Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida, directing.

Funeral service for Mr. Maurice Jones was held on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at Vann Funeral Home Chapel located at 4265 Saint Andrews Street Marianna, Florida 32448.  

Memorialization was by cremation.

Dr. Charles Hubert Hodges, Jr., 86, of Thomasville, Georgia, passed away on April 15, 2019 at John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital surrounded by his wife and children. 

Born August 6, 1932, in Marianna, Florida, Dr. Hodges was the son of the late Charles Hubert Hodges, Sr. and Mary Hall Hodges of Marianna, Florida. Dr. Hodges graduated magna cum laude and was salutatorian of the 1950 class of Marianna High School. Following three years of study at Davidson College, he graduated magna cum laude as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and also as a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After Davidson, he attended Emory School of Medicine, graduating in 1957. He completed an internship and a residency in surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas and served two years in the United States Air Force as a Captain on the surgical staff at Ramey Air Force Base, Puerto Rico. He then completed a urology residency at Hermann and M.D. Anderson Hospitals in Houston, Texas. 

While in Texas he met and married Sally VanArsdell Little. He practiced briefly with a urological group in Tallahassee, Florida before settling in Thomasville, Georgia in 1965. For the next 28 years he served the community as a board certified urologist. During that time, he served as Chief of Staff at Archbold Hospital and as President of the Georgia Urological Society. 

Dr. Hodges is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sally Little Hodges, his children, Elizabeth Hodges Benton (Robert) of Thomasville, William Reynolds Hodges (Tracee), of Thomasville and Rosemary Beach, Florida, and Charles Hubert Hodges III (Elizabeth) of Thomasville. 

Other survivors include his grandchildren: Margaret Ann Benton Marsh (Wallace), Virginia Hodges Ballard (Warren), Robert Lee Benton III (Bri), Thomas Hall Hodges (Charlotte), Charles Ross Hodges (Amanda), William Reynolds Hodges, Jr., Mary Elizabeth Benton, Claire Louise Hodges, and Jack Anthony Hodges, as well as four great-granddaughters and four great-grandsons. Other survivors include Ivey Singletary Force (Dylan) and Peyton Singletary. Dr. Hodges was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. William Hall Hodges, of Dothan, Alabama. 

A memorial service and reception celebrating Dr. Hodges’ life will be held on Monday, April 22, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Thomasville. Burial will be private.

Herman Edward Stuckey

Mr. Herman Edward Stuckey, 65, of Caryville, FL went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 in the comfort of his home, surrounding by his wife and family.

Mr. Stuckey was a native of Ponce de Leon, FL and a member of Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Caryville, FL.

He was preceded in death by his mother: Ms. Aronia Stuckey and a son, Dexter Stuckey.

He is survived by his wife, Ollie Mae Works Stuckey; his children: Tanya Stuckey (Chris Gilyard), Tonya Hall (Dravier), Tameka Stuckey, Kimberly Anderson (Elton Rumph), LaToya Matthews (Troy Marshall) and Herman Stuckey; stepchildren: Zaneta Peterson (Trevis), Tameka Burks (James) and Arthur Hudson; eighteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sisters and brothers: Oliver Hughey (Joe Ruth), Fayleonteen Nettles (Samuel), Genora Goodman (Johnny), Manuel Stuckey (Joan), Angela Stuckey, Sharon Loggins (Michael), Andre Stuckey, Ken Washington (Emma), Bruce Stuckey (Wanda) and Janet Thompson (Claude); mother-in-law: Hazel Works; father-in-law: Ransom Works (Argertha); aunt: Nora Sheffield; sisters and brothers-in-law: Cleveland Works, Clementine Howard (Elder Tony), Cheryl Peterson, Almeanus Chambers and Darrel Works (Barbara); numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends 4-7 PM, Friday, April 26, 2019 in the sanctuary of Spirit-Filled Church of God in Christ, 2128 Pate Pond Road (Hwy 279 South) in Caryville, Florida.

A Celebration of life will commenced at 11 AM, Saturday, April 27, 2019 in the sanctuary of Saint John African Methodist Episcopal Church, 308 Knox Hill Road, Ponce de Leon, Florida with the Elder Tony Howard delivering the words of comfort.

Mr. Stuckey will be laid to rest in the Euchee Valley Presbyterian Cemetery in DeFuniak Springs, Florida under the directions of Christian Memorial Chapel of Graceville, Florida.
