Willie James Wilson, Sr

Mr.  Willie James Wilson, Sr. age 90 of Webb, Alabama passed away Sunday, May 6th at Bonifay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bonifay, Florida.  Funeral Services was held at 2 p. m., Saturday, May 12, 2018 at McKinnie Funeral Home Chapel located at 5304 Bowden Hill Road Campbellton, FL, with Reverend David Britt, Elder Carolyn Morgan and Brother Lenoris Dixon officiating, Memorialization by cremation with McKinnie Funeral Home of Campbellton in charge of arrangements.

Willie James (B’ buddy) Wilson was born on August 28, 1927 to the late Ollie Mae Wilson and the late Charlie Redding. He lived most of his life in Cottonwood, Alabama and married the late Lula Mae Wilson. He was a member of Union Hall Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his son: Louis Junior Wilson; his parents; five siblings: Lucy Collins, Katie Clemmons, Ida Bell Wilson, Lorene Wilson and Jonathan Wilson.

He is survived by seven children: Christine Wilson, Janny Mae Wilson, Willie James Wilson Jr., Kane Edward Wilson, and Leroy Wilson all of Webb, AL; Virgina Wilson and John Lee Wilson both  of Dothan, AL. Thirteen siblings: Dora Britt, Annie Hope, and Willie C. Wilson all of Campbellton, FL, Judy Miller (Joe), Madie Dell Russ, Arlane Douglas, Janeria Woodard, and Eva Fletcher all of Dothan, AL, Adell Morris of Cottonwood, AL, Vetchus Lynn of Raleigh, NC, Talmadge Redding of Ashford, AL, William Wilson (Dorothy) of Baltimore, MD, and Wyles C. Redding of Detroit, MI. and a host grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Homegoing services will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11:00 AM from the sanctuary of Tabernacle M.B. Church, 1204 Palo Alto Avenue, Panama City, FL with Pastor Joseph McCalister and Reverend Danny Williamson officiating. Interment in the Hillside Cemetery. Vann Funeral Home in charge.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories, a devoted daughter: Symenthia F. Ray of Panama City, FL; four loving sisters: Julie Williamson of San Antonio, TX, Erlene Lambert of Tallahassee, FL, Annie McPhatter (Lee) of Upper Marlboro, MD, Julia Williams of Texarkana, TX; a devoted brother, J.C. Mr. Lorenzo Brown, native of Ebro, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on May 4, 2018 in the Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center of Panama City, Florida.  He was 77 years old. 

Lorenzo was born on February 25, 1941 to the late Mr. George & Mrs. Sylvester Brown in Washington County, Florida.  He was a member of the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Panama City, Florida and a retiree from the Bay Line Railroad Company. 

He leaves to cherish his memories six (6) brothers: Clarence Brown (Fannie D., deceased), Henry Smith (Mary), Willie Smith (Geraldine), Bass Smith, Willie Brown (Betty), and Lenard Brown (Phyllis);  three (3) sisters: Arlene Butler (Chester), Vida Campbell (John) and Hilda Middleton; god-daughter: Debra White; devoted friends: Ella Cobb, and Harvey Lee Douglas;  along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

A Celebration of Lorenzo’s Life will be held 2 PM CST, Saturday, May 12, 2018 from the sanctuary of the McQueen’s Temple First Born Church in Vernon, Florida with pastor, Jr. Bishop J.O. Brown,  Rev. Woodrow Wilson, Rev. Wade Brown, Jr. Bishop W.A. Potter, Sr., Rev. Richard Peterson, and Bro. Leonard Dean, officiating.  Committal Service will follow in the St. Luke Memorial Gardens in Vernon, Florida with Cooper Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida, directing.  

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM CST, Friday, May 11, 2018 from the sanctuary of the Mt. Mr. Leo Tensley, of Chipley, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on May 5, 2018.  He was 74 years old.  

Leo was born on July 22, 1943 in Washington County, Florida to the late Mr. Sylvester and Mrs. Leatha Tensley.  He was a construction worked by trade. 

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife: Lula Tensley; three (3) sons: Ansell Tensley, Tommy Tensley and Leo Tensely, Jr.; one (1) daughter: Kris Tinsley; two (2) grandchildren; two (2) sisters: Barbara Morris (Jake) and Angela Houston (Robert); aunt: Margie Brown; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

A Celebration of Leo’s Life will be held 11 AM CST, Saturday, May 12, 2018 from the sanctuary of the St. Joseph A.M.E. Church in Chipley, Florida with pastor, Rev. Lina Ellis, Rev. Larry Brown, and Bishop David C. Mack, officiating.  Committal Services will follow in the Church Cemetery with Cooper Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida, directing. 

Public Viewing will be from 11 AM – 9 PM, Friday, May 11, 2018 in the Cooper Funeral Home Chapel of Chipley, Florida.  The remains will lie in repose one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.  Friends may sign the guestbook online at www. cooperfhchipley.com 

Virginia Lee Singleton Mathis

Virginia Lee Singleton Mathis, 74, died Saturday, May 12, 2018 at home in Prattville, AL.

Virginia was born May 18, 1943 in San Diego, CA to Raymond James and April May Singleton. She attended Downey High School in Downey, CA.

She met her future Ronald David Mathis, Sr. by chance one summer when she went to visit her aunt while he was on leave from the Navy, visting his uncle. They married one year later. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother for the rest of her life, she raised two children at stations across the United States, including Lemoore, CA, Jacksonville, FL, Montgomery, AL, Norfolk, VA, Quincy, MA and Mountainview, CA before finally settling in Prattville, AL.

Virginia took great joy in her family, traveling the American west, her “lunch bunch” and attending Prattville First Baptist Church.

She was preceeded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ronald; her brother, James (Butch) Singelton of San Angelo, TX; her children, Ron Mathis (Cliff Beach) of Pelham, AL and Sheryl Mathis Keith (Bryan) of Marianna, FL; her grandsons, Zack Everett (Debbie) of Ambler, PA and Daniel Everett (Amber) of Greenwood, FL. She has nine great grandchildren: Chance, Makenna, Sean, Emma Grace, Sofia, Lainey, Millie, Evan and Duke.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Prattville Memorial Chapel at 2:00 pm with visitation beginning at 1:00 pm. Graveside services will be held the next day, Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Malone, FL at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center; P.O. Box 4464; Houston, TX 77210-4464.

Jannie Hughes Kent

Jannie Hughes Kent age 78, of Alvin, Texas went home to be with the Lord on May 10, 2018.

Jannie was born on November 9, 1939 in Chipley, Florida to Joe Hughes and Lena Jackson. She worked at the IGA in Cottondale, Florida as a cashier for 10 years. She never met a stranger and she loved the Lord. She loved her kids, grandkids, and all of her family. She loved to fish any chance she got. She will be remembered as a loving mother, sister and friend. 

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her two daughters: Connie Elkins and husband Don of Alvin, Texas, Judy Stephens and husband Johnny of Alford, Florida; sons: Michael Wayne Kent and wife Brenda of Crestview, Florida, Gregory Keith Kent and wife Anissa of Dothan, Alabama; two brothers: Jerry Hughes and wife Louise of Cottondale, Florida, Jimmy Hughes and wife Inez of Alford, Florida; one sister: Josie Hall and husband Robert of Bascom, Florida; ten grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and loved ones.

Funeral services will be held at 2P.M. Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Round Lake Baptist Church in Alford, Florida. Interment will follow in the Alford City Cemetery. Obert Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida directing. 

The family will receive friends for visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Teruko Knox, age 84, of Campbellton, Florida went home to be with the Lord on Saturday May 12, 2018 at the Washington County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Chipley, Florida. 

She was born in Okinawa, Japan and is the wife of Mr. Coy Lee Knox of Campbellton. 

Mrs. Knox is survived by her husband Coy Lee Knox of Campbellton, Florida; two daughters: Reiko Moriyama and Tomiko Moriyama both of Okinawa, Japan; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 11AM, Saturday, May 19, 2018, in the M. Sue & Rodney D. Pittman Memorial Chapel, 5441 Cooper Street, Graceville, Florida.

James Houston (Jim) Joiner

James Houston (Jim) Joiner died peacefully in Holmes County Florida on May 12th at his home at the age of 90.  

Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years Betty of Holmes County Fla, by daughters Maria Allen of Morton IL, Beverly Joiner, Penny Woodham, and Karon Mattox of Holmes County, son and daughter in law Brad and Staci Joiner, son Chad of Holmes County. 12 grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren. Sister and brother in law Sue and Al Nix of Huntsville AL.  Brother in law Herman Bolden of Birmingham AL and Sister in law Jo Ann Roney of Dothan AL.

Jim is preceded in death by brother John A Joiner of Pensacola FL, Joe W Holman of Virginia. Sisters Willie Hall of Lynn Haven FL, Janice Corbitt of Panama City, FL, Hassie Stewart of Graceville FL. son in law Keith Woodham of Holmes County FL, and the twin daughter of Brad and Staci Joiner.

Jim was born on August 3rd, 1927 in Holmes County Fl. to John A and Corine Joiner. He graduated from Poplar Springs High School. After graduation, he joined the Navy and served in World War II in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Arkansas. After serving his country, he received degrees from the University of Florida and Troy University. He taught school in the Holmes County school system for 38 years. A man of great integrity, you typically knew where he stood on an issue. He enjoyed discussion of politics and societal matters until his passing.

Known as a tireless worker, Jim farmed peanuts and cattle into his 80’s.  He maintained his interest in agriculture until his death, last visiting family land and cattle a week before his passing.

He married Betty Bolden of Slocomb AL in 1955. They settled in the Poplar Springs community where they raised their family. He was a long time active member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities. 

Visitation is scheduled for 6 to 8pm Monday May 14th, with funeral Tuesday May 15th at 11am at Bethel Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bessie Swails Gatlin of Blountstown, FL transitioned from life temporal to life eternal on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at the River Valley Rehabilitation Center in Blountstown, FL.

She was a member of the St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church with 16345 SE River St Blountstown, FL with Rev. Dr. C.L. Wilson, Pastor and Minister Michael Roland, Eulogist.

Interment will be in the Magnolia Cemetery.

Vann Funeral Home will be in charge of the service.

The viewing will be held Friday, May 18, 2018 from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Vann Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gatlin will lie in repose at the church from 11:00 A.M. until time for the service.

T.J. Chumney age 39 of Rehobeth, Alabama passed away on May 12, 2018. He was born in Dothan, Alabama on November 16, 1978.

He is survived by his father John Chumney; mother Patricia Senn; daughter Alexus and one brother, Nick.

Funeral Services for T.J. will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018 in the Williams Funeral Home with Brother Greg Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the Madrid City Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral.

Marian Bradley

On May 8, 2018, Marian Bradley passed away after a brief and unexpected illness at age 78. She will be forever remembered by her surviving family including her former husband and lifelong friend Don Bradley; children Aron and Karen Bradley of Greenwood, Fla., Scott Bradley of Daytona, Fla., and former daughter-in-law Cindy Croxton of Alford, Fla.; grandchildren Donnie and Bobbi Bradley of Greenwood, Nicole Bradley of Greenwood, and Ryan and Jessica Bradley Wells of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren Ava Clay, and Benjamin and Eli Barfield.

Over the past 40 years she had three beloved pets: Cotton, Mrs. Bouser and Cara Mia, who we know are happy to see her again. She loved all animals as she loved her family and was known to keep scraps and kibble in her car for strays. Marian moved to the United States from her native Holland in 1963. She had an adventurous spirit and lived in many states before retiring to northwest Florida, where she enjoyed making weekly dinners for her family. 

Her family is planning a celebration of her life in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, donations to Partners for Pets in her memory are greatly appreciated.

Barbara June Cooper of Marianna, Fl. went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday afternoon May 13, 2018 after an extended illness.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday May 19, 2018 in the Eastside Baptist Church in Marianna, Fl. with the Rev. Steve Canada and Pastor Bill Stephens officiating.  Family First Funeral Care of Dothan will be directing.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until service time in the church sanctuary.

Barbara was born September 25, 1934 in Key West, Fl. daughter of the late Edney Parker and Edna Pinder Parker.  A native of the Florida Keys (a Conch) and the youngest of 11 children her parents were a pioneer family of the Florida Keys.  She spent her early years in Islamorada and was a survivor of the historic 1935 (Labor Day Storm) hurricane.  She moved to Marianna in the early 1980’s from Deland, Fl, was a bookkeeper and a faithful member of Eastside Baptist Church.  Barbara will be remembered as sweet, funny, made the best Key Lime Pie and many other great desserts.  She loved gospel music.  Ivan Parker, “The Lighthouse” and “Midnight Cry” were some of her favorites.  She leaves a legacy of faith, love, laughter and kindness.

She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, John W. Cooper of Marianna, 3 daughters Christol (Kevin) Lott of Blue Ridge, Ga. Valerie (Chuck) Schimmelman of Plantation Key, Fl. and Pamela (Tim) Bohnstedt of Tavernier, Fl. her son Dwayne (Rhonda) Cooper of Lehigh Acres, Fl. a brother Norman (Mary Jo) Parker of Inverness, Fl. 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren also survive.

Ms. Virginia Allene Battles of Grand Ridge entered into eternal rest of Tuesday, May 8th in Jackson Hospital following an extended illness.  She was 66 years old.

 A native of Calhoun County, she was of the Baptist faith and a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Precious memories will forever remain with: two sisters, Christanna Anderson and Gladys Marie Battles both of Grand Ridge, Florida; two brothers, Cornelius Battles and wife Melissa of Grand Ridge, Florida and LaShon Gilbert of Port St. Lucie, Florida; five aunts, Mary Ann Wobbleton of Stuart, Florida, Floizell Smith, Sylvia Lewis, Sylone Robinson all of Grand Ridge, Florida and Mary Hearns of Greenwood, Florida; five uncles, Nathaniel Battles and wife Bessie, Herbert C. Battles and wife Elisa both of Blountstown, Florida, Bradley Battles of Stuart, Florida, Willie Smith and wife Emma of Geneva, Florida and Rev. T.C. Smith and wife Mary of Grand Ridge, Florida; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held Saturday, May 19th at 11a.m. at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Randy McMillian, Rev. Mark Dudley, Rev. John Smith and Rev. T.C. Smith officating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery with arrangements entrusted to the caring staff at Peoples Funeral Home in Marianna, Florida.    

The remains will lie-in-repose for one hour prior to the 11a.m. funeral time on Saturday at Pleasant Hill.

Johnny Louis Peace

Mr. Johnny Louis Peace of Marianna, Florida entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 10th.  He was 73 years old.

 He was of a graduate of the Jackson County Training School.  Upon graduation, he joined the United States Marines, serving a tour of duty before reciving an Honorable Discharge.  He was of the Methodist faith and a member of Jerusalem African Methodist Episcopal Church.

 Precious memories will forever remain with his daughter, Nancy Morton of Marianna, Florida; one grandson, DeShaun Bowers of Marianna, Florida; one brother, Don Peace of Marianna, Florida; three sisters, Jennifer Pittman and husband Otis of Marianna, Florida, Bobbie Dixon of Cottondale, Florida and Deloris Merritt of Miami, Florida; four uncles, Lewis Peace of Chicago, Illinois, Pedro Peace of Tampa, Florida, Mose Merritt and wife Eloise of Miami, Florida and Alex Merritt and wife Sherry of Spokane, Washington; two aunts, Clara Cargill of Louisville, Kentucky and Lena Jenkins of Tampa, Florida; special niece and caregiver, Chrystal Pittman of Marianna, Florida; two special cousins, Ruby Keel and Doris White both of Marianna, Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

 A homegoing celebration will be held Saturday, May 19th at 11a.m. at Jerusalem African Methodist Episcopal Church with Pastor Carlos Redding, Rev. Andrea McGlockton and Rev. Charles Flowers officiating.  Memorialization will be by cremation with arrangements entrusted to the Caring Staff at Peoples Funeral Home of Marianna, Florida.

 The remains will lie-in-repose for one hour prior to the 11a.m. funeral time on Saturday at Jerusalem.

Wardell Ward

Wardell Ward

Mr. Wardell Ward age 72 of Howell, New Jersey, formerly of Campbellton, FL went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at the Abington Hospital, Abington, PA. 

Mr. Ward was born in Campbellton, FL and had lived in Jacksonville, FL and Newark, NJ before settling in Howell in 1997.  He worked for American Airlines out of the Newark Airport prior to his retirement in 1995. 

Wardell was the superintendent at Newark Church of Christ and was a God-fearing man whose participation at church included teaching Sunday school and acting as a song leader.  He enjoyed bowling and riding his motorcycle.  Wardell loved young people and was a wonderful mentor to those he was involved with. 

Wardell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice Ward of Howell; Charla Ward of Springfield and Clara Ward of Green Brook; three grandchildren, Wardell Thaddeus Ward of Howell, Brandon Earl Ward of Green Brook and Darris Alan Morgan of NY; and one great grandchild, Alexander Gray Harrison-Ward of VA; other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Earlene Benton, 5655 Cardinal Road in Campbellton, FL.

Visitation will be 5-7 PM, Thursday, May 24, 2018 at the M. Sue & Rodney D. Pittman Memorial Chapel, 5441 Cooper Street in Graceville, FL.

A celebration of life will be 10:00 AM, Friday, May 25, 2018 in the M. Sue & Rodney D. Pittman Memorial Chapel, 5441 Cooper Street, Graceville, FL.

He will be laid to rest in the Saint Paul/New Bethel Cemetery in Campbellton, Florida under the directions of Christian Memorial Chapel of Graceville.

Inez Calloway, 77, passed away at her home on Thursday, May 17, 2018 surrounded by her loved ones. 

Inez was born on September 14, 1940 in Jackson County.  She attended Malone High School and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Malone.  She married the love of her life, Johnnie Calloway, on September 7, 1956.  Inez retired from the Jackson County School Board, after working at Malone High School Cafeteria for over 30 years.  

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Johnnie Calloway; son, Ronnie Calloway; grandson, Jeremy Calloway, infant son of Ronnie and Debbie Calloway in 1978; her father, J.W. Conrad, and her mother, Pearl Head of Tifton, GA.  

Inez is survived by her daughter-in-law, Debbie Calloway; daughters, Kay Green and husband, Allen, Lori Burke and husband, Bob, Pam Bridges and husband, Les; sons, Scott Calloway and wife, Sharon, Andy Calloway and wife, Robin, Jason Calloway and wife, Renee; four sisters, Hilda Petralia, Faye Walker, Teresa Pelham, and Wanda Jones; one brother, Ricky Conrad; 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Sumerlin and Mr. Ed Ham officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the Friendship Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Rubie Yon Davis Jones, age 101, of Blountstown, FL, transitioned from life temporal to life eternal on Tuesday, May 2, 2018, in Newport Va.

She was known as “Big Mama”, “Aunt Doll Baby”, “Ru”, and “Sis” by her family and friends in Calhoun County she was a die-hard fisherman of Blountstown that lived in Graves Creek Community.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 12:00 Noon at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, Blountstown, FL with Rev. C.L. Wilson Pastor.

Interment will be in the Graves Creek Cemetery, Blountstown, FL

The viewing will be held Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Mrs. Jones will lie in repose at the church from 11:00 A.M. until time for the service.

Cecil Clyde Turner died on May 19, 2018, with his daughter, Roberta at his side, in Panama City Beach, Florida. 

Mr. Turner was born on February 20, 1929, in Chatom, Alabama. He was a resident of Mobile, Alabama, a Professional Land Surveyor, and civil engineer working at the Mobile Housing Board until his retirement. Mr. Turner helped develop the water works system on Dauphin Island, managed the urban renewal program for the Mobile Housing Board during the construction of Interstate 65. Mr. Turner spent his off time operating his private land surveying business from his home, especially enjoying those jobs in the “deep woods” of south Alabama. Prior to his retirement as a Professional Land Surveyor, he surveyed property in Ft. Payne, Alabama, for Russel Miles and Company. Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his wife, Cecil Simmons Turner, his parents, and siblings. He is survived by his daughter, Roberta Turner Newell, husband James, grandson, Andrew Allen Newell, Granddaughter in Law, Kelsie Leanne Newell, and Granddaughter, Tiffany Kay Newell. Mr. Turner enjoyed his retirement years by living with his daughter, caring for his grandchildren, and gardening. Mr. Turner loved his family, his work, his friends, and the deep woods.

A graveside service will be conducted on May 23, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Magnolia Cemetery, 1202 Virginia Street, Mobile, Alabama.

Roy E. Kay age 68 of Marianna, passed away on Monday, May 21, 2018 in Blountstown, FL.

Roy has lived in Jackson County for the past 25 years, moving here from Bay County.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edward Kay and Trudie Daniels Olson, his brother Floy “Ricky” Kay. He is survived by his step-father Dennis Olson, his significant other, Jo Linda, two sons; Jason Kay and Benjamin Harris, step-daughter Melissa Sanders and husband Marty, step-son Tommy Danley and wife Tina, brother-in-law Nick Mason, sister-in-law Sue Fidler, six grandchildren, nephew Steven Kay, niece Stephanie Kay, great nephew Jaedon Kay.

A memorial service for Roy will be held at a later date.

Marianna Chapel Funeral Home is charge of arrangements.
