Odell Ward

Odell Ward age 82 of Marianna passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017. He was born to the late M.D. and Inez Ward.  Odell was a Veteran of the United States Army and attended Trinity Baptist Church in Marianna. He worked as the Supervisor of Maintenance for 35 plus years at Doizer Boys School and 7 years with the Sunland Center. Odell was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed farming, fishing, and camping. His greatest joy was spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents M.D. and Inez Ward, 4 brothers, and 1 sister.

Odell is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Evelyn Ward, son Michael Ward, daughters Sherry Pinckard, Tammy Wilson Neal (Clifton), Melinda Sherrill Canuso (Gabe), 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren.

Services for Odell will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 18, 2017 in the Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Roland Rabon officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until time of service.

Mr. William Perry Brown (Billy) of Vero Beach, FL, transitioned from life temporal to life eternal on May 7, 2017 in Indian River Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Blountstown, FL and a member of Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church, Vero Beach, FL.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 12 Noon at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church 16345 River Rd. Blountstown, FL 32424 with Rev. Dr. C. L. Wilson, Pastor, Rev. Michael Monfiston, Rev. Warren Mosley and Rev. Andrew Davis, Officiating.

Interment will be in the Hugh Creek Cemetery.

Vann Funeral Home will be in charge of the service.

Mr. Brown will lie in repose at the church from 11:00 A.M. until time for the service.

The viewing will be held Friday, May 19, 2017 from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.m. at Vann Funeral Home.

Bishop Arthur Edward Cutler, Sr

Bishop Arthur Edward Cutler, Sr. age 84, of Panama City, Florida and formerly of Fairfax, GA went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at the Clifford Chester Sims State Veterans Nursing Home in Panama City. 

He was a Licensed Funeral Director/Embalmer at Christian Memorial Chapel and retired from Gulf Coast State College in Panama City.

Bishop Cutler was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Evangelist Geneva Cutler (July 11, 2013).

Bishop leaves to cherish his memories a  daughter: Frances Cutler-Robinson (Johnny), Jacksonville, FL; two sons: William Cutler (Rochelle), Panama City, FL and Arthur E. Cutler, Jr. (Corine), Panama City, FL; one: Peggy Reinhart, Tallahassee, FL; four brothers: Dr. Albert Cutler, Tampa, FL, the Reverend George Cutler (Rose), Detroit, MI, Wallace Cutler, Ypsilanti, MI and Ronald Cutler (Natalie), Atlanta, GA; sister-in-law: Althea Cutler; thirteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, May 26, 2017, 4-7 PM at Saints Temple Apostolic Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, 1423 Fountain Avenue, Panama City, FL.

A Home going celebration will be 11AM, Saturday, May 27, 2017, at the Neal’s Temple First Born Church of the Living God, 900 East 11th St; Panama City, Florida.

Bishop Cutler will be laid to rest in the Redwood Cemetery, Panama City, FL under the directions of Christian Memorial Chapel of Graceville, FL.

Marshall Keith Ralls, Sr

Marshall Keith Ralls, Sr. age 59 of Cottondale passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017.

Marshall was born on January 13, 1958 in Chester, Pennsylvania to Kenneth and Geraldine Ralls. He has been a resident of Jackson County for the past 14 years moving here from Rutledge, Pennsylvania. Marshall was a graduate of Swarthmore High School. He loved his family, Eagles, and Philadelphia. 

Marshall is survived by his wife Margaret K. Ralls of Cottondale, sons Marshall Ralls, Jr. (Amber) of Alford, Michael Ralls of Cottondale, daughters Meredith Ralls (Brent Turner) of Cottondale, and Mary Widgeon (Scott) of Dothan, brothers Kenny Ralls of Illinois, and Asa Ralls (Dawn) of Cottondale, grandchildren Jade, Austin, Gabriel, Elise, Marshall III, and Logan.

Services for Marshall will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 25, 2017 in the Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the First Assembly of God Church of Cottondale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 24, 2017 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.

Ruth Ross Medlock

Ruth Ross Medlock, 82, of Palatka (formerly of Marianna) passed away Friday, May 19, 2017 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka.

Ruth was born May 31, 1934 in Johnson City, New York to George and Mildred Ross.  Coming from Marianna, she had been a resident of Putnam County for the past 63 years, first living in Interlachen and later in Palatka. She founded O’Bar Western Supplies which she owned and operated in the Peniel area of Palatka during the late 1960s and into the 1970s.     She loved horses and most other animals. She had been an active member of Horseman’s Club in Palatka before and after it was moved to its present location. She enjoyed sharing her time with other local organizations. She felt it was a blessing to have lived in this area of Florida. The family sends a special “thank you” to her many friends and family for their support on this journey.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William O. “Shorty” Medlock of Palatka; three nephews and spouses, Charlie and Cathy Smith, Mike Smith, and George and Gail Smith, all of Palatka; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Masters Funeral Home in Palatka with Pastor Tommy Combs officiating. Interment followed in the Palatka Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Charese Michelle Smith, of Marianna, FL transitioned from life temporal to life eternal on Friday, May 19, 2017 in Bay Medical Scared Hospital in Panama City, FL.

She was a member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, Marianna, FL; and retired from the Jackson County and Washington County School Board.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 10:00 A.m. at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church 2871 Orange Street Marianna, FL with Rev. Riley Henderson Pastor, Minister Charlie Martin, Rev. Darryl Johnson Sr., Rev. Deblasis Johnson and Pastor Nathaniel Hodges officiating.

Interment will be in the Friendship Cemetery.

Vann Funeral Home will be in charge of the service.

The viewing will be held Friday, May 26, 2017 from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Vann Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Jessie L. Griffin, age 43 of Marianna, Florida passed away on May 17, 2017 in Marianna, Florida.  Jessie was born in Tallahassee, Florida on July 25, 1973.  He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and enjoyed attending services there.  Jessie enjoyed cooking for his family and genuinely loved life.  He also enjoyed tinkering and fixing things as well as tending to his garden. 

Jessie is survived by one aunt, Margie May of Cypress, FL; three uncles, Johnny Earl McDaniel of Sneads, Florida, Herschel McDaniel of Dickerson, Texas and Cecil Griffin of Georgia as well as many cousins.

Jessie was preceded in death by his parents Edgar G. and Nellie Griffin.

Memorial Service will be held Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 5:00 PM CDT at Lanier-Andler Funeral Home Chapel in Sneads, FL with Rev. John Miles officiating.

Owen D. Blackwell age 79 of Marianna passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017. He was born in Praco, Alabama on September 1, 1937 to the late Robert W. Blackwell and Pauline Elmore Blackwell. Owen was a retired United States Airforce veteran who served his country for 24 years.

Owen was preceded in death by his parents, multiple siblings, and wife Jane Blackwell. He is survived by his wife Joyce R. Blackwell, daughter Treiska J. Davies (Steve), granddaughter Shelby J. Brown, and great-granddaughter Serenity Brown.

Memorialization will be by cremation. A family graveside will be held in Quinton, AL at a later date.

Rev. James Garrett age 83 of Malone, FL passed away Monday May 22nd at the Marianna Health and Rehabilitation Center, Marianna, FL.

Funeral Services will be held 11a.m., Saturday, May 27th at Second Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church located at 362 - 15th street Malone, FL, where the Rev. George Jackson is pastor with Rev. Henry E. Taylor and Rev. Rudolph Dickens officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with McKinnie Funeral Home of Campbellton directing.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p. m. Friday, May 26th at the McKinnie Funeral Home Chapel. 

James Garrett was born in Gordon Alabama on July 7, 1933 to the late Joe Garrett and Victoria McCarter. He was a quiet man who enjoyed family, friends and gardening, but his passion was his love for the Lord. He was a true man of God!

He was preceded in death by his brother Willie Joe Garrett.

James Whitney Nelson

James Whitney Nelson, age 40 of Marianna, went home to be with the Lord on May 22, 2017 at his residence.

Whitney was born on January 5, 1977 in Panama City, Florida to James Royce Nelson and Mary Sue Martin. A lifelong resident of the panhandle, he was a 1995 graduate of Chipley High School. He was a church member at New Hope Baptist Church in Marianna, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Crissy Nelson of Marianna, Florida; sons: Austin Nelson and Christian Nelson of Marianna, Florida; daughters: Lauren Nelson, Tasha Jones, Kimberly Jones, Jasmine Jones all of Marianna, Florida; step-father: Gene Martin and wife Ruth of Chipley, Florida; step-mother: Tamara Nelson of Chipley, Florida; brother: Garrett Martin and wife Blair of Chipley, Florida; uncles: Wayne Nelson and wife Betty of Chipley, Florida, Eugene Nelson of Panama City, Florida.

Funeral service will be held 11A.M. Saturday, May 27, 2017 at New Hope Baptist Church in Marianna, Florida with Rev. Brandon Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in Macedonia Cemetery in Cottondale, Florida. Obert Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida directing.

Ralph D. Greene

Ralph D. Greene, 86, of Marianna passed away April 13, 2017 at Marianna Health and Rehab.

He is survived by his children, Dora, Arthur, and Richard; sibilings, Wayne, Diane and Connie; stepchildren, Michelle, Cindy, Rachel and many beloved grandchildren.

Ralph was born March 1, 1931 in Freemont, SK. He served 11 honorable years in the U.S. Navy as a maintenance engineer.  He then worked as an engineer at Kenai Packers on the fishing boats and was a merchant marine. Ralph enjoyed warm weather and traveling around, visiting friends and family. He lived mostly in Arizona and Florida in his later years. He was charismatic, intelligent and stoic; strict and stern, yet caring and generous; brutally honest and outspoken; respected by all. Sharp as a tack until the end. He was greatly loved and will be very missed.

Robert Thomas “Bobby” Andreasen

Robert Thomas “Bobby” Andreasen, 63, of Greenwood died Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Jackson Hospital.

He was born at Tyndall Air Force Base to the late Thomas Guy and Lotte Andreasen in 1953. Bobby graduated from Marianna High School in 1971, and then attended Chipola Jr. College Vocational School in Electronics. He retired from the Postal Service after more than 35 years of service as a rural carrier.   Bob was well versed in the art of mechanics and enjoyed carpentry, hunting, fishing, astronomy, archeology, gardening, local history and many other interests, including conversation. He was a mentor and friend to many and will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Bobby is survived by three children, Frederick and Christy Andreasen both of Marianna, Alison Andreasen of Panama City; two brothers, Thomas Andreasen, Jr of Greenwood, Joseph Andreasen of Naples; one sister, Jeanette Andreasen of Tucson, AZ.

Services were held at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel. Interment will be at Greenwood Baptist Church with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel in charge of arrangements.

George D. “Pete” Hilton

George D. “Pete” Hilton

George D. “Pete” Hilton of Marianna, passed away May 27, 2017 in Jackson Hospital surrounded by his family. 

Pete was born January 6, 1931 in Youngstown, Florida to George D. and Omie Blackburn Hilton.  He attended Bay County and Marianna High Schools.  He was a Navy veteran serving in the Korean Conflict.  After his discharge from the Navy, he worked in Maintence at Graham Air Base and on the family farm in Kynesville.  He and his wife, Eddie, moved from Kynesville to Cottondale in 1964 where they then owned and operated Hilton’s IGA for over 20 years.  He was a member of the Cottondale Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Cottondale City Commission where he was Mayor for several terms. He was Cottondale’s City Manager for eight years before his retirement.  He was also a member of the Cottondale Kiwanis Club.

Pete was a member of the First Baptist Church in Marianna, and enjoyed the fellowship of the Fisherman’s Sunday School Class.  He was ordained as a deacon in 1958.  He served his Deacon families in Bethlehem Baptist Church in Kynesville, First Baptist Church in Cottondale, and First Baptist Church in Marianna.  He served as Moderator of the Chipola Baptist Association for four years.

Pete was a member of the American Legion Smith Kelly Post 100 where he served as the Post’s Chaplain for several years and was Post Commander for two terms.

He was on the Board for the Jackson County Habitat for Humanity.  He enjoyed helping build and later supervise the building of several homes in Jackson County. 

He was pre-deceased by his parents, George D. and Omie Hilton, sisters, Gladys Suggs and husband, J.V. and Peggy Hawthorne and husband, Joseph; his first grandson Ryan Hilton Russell, Brother-in-Law Arnold Lambe, Sister-in-Law Betty Padgett, and Brother-in-law and Sister-in-Law Lloyd & Myrtle Padgett.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eddie Padgett Hilton; daughter Susan Russell and husband Raymond of Blountstown; son David Hilton and wife, Renea of Marianna; Grandsons, Kyle Russell and wife, Maegan of Blountstown and Marshall Hilton and wife, Tiffany of Brewton, AL.  He is also survived by Sisters-in-Law Katie Padgett and Lola Lambe; Brother-in-Law John Padgett all of Marianna, and a host of nieces and nephews. He would have met his first great-grandchild, Julie Ann Russell in early July.  

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 30, 2017, beginning at ten o’clock in the morning at the First Baptist Church in Marianna with Rev. Jeff Powell officiating. Private family interment will follow in Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery in Kynesville.

Betty L. Williams age 71 of Marianna passed away on Friday, May 26, 2017. She was born on September 19, 1945 in West Virginia. Betty has been a residence of Marianna for the past thirty-one years. She enjoyed playing bingo, drinking coffee and spending time with her grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents Troy Cox and Rena Mae Smith Cox; husband of thirty-one years, Allen Williams. She is survived by her children, Linda Oxendine (Shane Griggs), Scott Williams, and Keith Williams (Tabatha); siblings, Harry Cox, Ruthanne Bass, Alan Cox, and Brian Cox; grandchildren, Megan Fields (Lamar), Jodi Ellis, Allen Walker (Becca), Alanna Williams (Gina), Mindy Offhaus, Rebecca Williams, Calynda Offhaus, Ashlynn Williams, and twelve great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Williams. (5261 Twins Lane, Marianna, Fl 32448). All friends and family are invited.

Donna Brown Barineau, 70, born in Marianna, Florida, and living in Sneads, Florida all her life, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2017, at her home in Sneads, Florida, after a lengthy illness. She was a retired Secretary with the State of Florida, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Sneads, Florida.

Donna was very much loved by her surviving sisters, Marilyn Barrett of Sneads and Candace Burch and husband Charles of Sneads.  Also three nephews and one niece.

Betty Jean Toole Bruner, 87 of Cottondale, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Covenant Care Bay Med Center in Panama City, FL.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at the Chapel of James & Lipford Funeral Home with Revs. Wendell Dinkins and Addis Habbard officiating.

Burial will follow in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral Home Tuesday, 10 a.m. until time of service.

Ms. Betty was born in Cottonwood, AL on August 22, 1929 to the late Adel Toole and Leonia West Toole. A beloved wife and mother, Ms. Betty enjoyed the farm with her husband, cooking for her family and tending to her flowers. She was a long time member of Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church before becoming a member of Campbellton United Methodist Church.

Preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Willie Paul Bruner, two sons Lee Bruner and Mark Bruner.

She is survived by one son Tim Bruner(Vicky), Cottondale; two daughters, Rena McClenny(Derrel), Dothan, AL; Diane Smith(Grady), Graceville; one brother Thomas Toole(Barbara), Graceville; two sisters Janice Brannon(J.W.), Abbeville, AL, Faye Bell(Hiram), Graceville; four grandchildren Terisa Kopp(Robby), Jeremy McClenny(Gentry), Chad McClenny(Cami), Shannon Holton(Brian); eight great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

Charles L. Mitchell, 76 of Graceville, FL went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at his residence.

Home-going service will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Damascus Baptist Church with Revs. Brian Taylor and Chester Padgett officiating. Burial will follow in Church cemetery with James & Lipford Funeral Home of Graceville directing.

Family will receive friends Tuesday, May 30 at Damascus Baptist Church, 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Born near Clio, Alabama, Mr. Charles was a graduate of Barbour County High School and he was a U.S. Army National Guardsman for a number of years. He worked with Pea River Electrical Cooperative for several years, transferring to West Florida Electric Cooperative in Graceville where he retired as a lineman following 33 years.

An acclaimed Blacksmith, Mr. Charles was very gifted making several hand rails, crosses and many other works not only for his church, but for many in and around the community. He looked out for the less fortunate especially widows and children.

Predeceased by his father Ocie Mitchell, mother Thelma Arnold Mitchell Carmichael, step-father Charlie Carmichael, one brother Larry Mitchell.

Survived by his beloved wife Ann Mitchell, Graceville; two daughters Wendy Mitchell, Dothan, AL, Lori Franklin(Dana), Chipley; two brothers Gerald Mitchell(Betty), Enterprise, AL, Bobby Mitchell(Katy), Ozark, AL; three sisters Jeanette Brundage(Al), Columbus, GA, Dot Carmichael, Dothan, Frances Taylor(Joseph), Ozark, AL; two grandchildren Lana Carol Skipper, Evan Thomas Franklin, several nieces and nephews.

Jim was born in Calhoun County on March 8, 1924 to Acey and Maggie Brooks Duncan.  He was a former resident of Lynn Haven and had resided in Jackson County for a number of years.  Jim was known as a gifted harmonica player. 

He was preceded in death by his companion Cornell; his parents, Acey and Maggie Duncan; one brother, Rufus Duncan and three sisters, Cora Brown, Pearlee Suggs and Clara Louise Heath. 

Survivors include his sister, Elizabeth Mae Bowles of Ellaville, GA; nieces, Shirley Childree and Sarah Christine Rains (Carl); nephews, Buford Suggs (Linda) all of Lynn Haven and Martell Suggs (JoAnn) of Chipley; several other nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, June 1, 2017 at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel with Rev. Rhul Edenfield officiating.  Interment will follow at Alford City Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. 

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until funeral time at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.

Frances Cogburn Zawada

Frances Cogburn Zawada passed away Sunday, May 28, 2017, in Tallahassee, Florida. 

Frances was born January 28, 1930, in Marianna, FL, to the late W. Adison and Bazzie Swailes Cogburn, and grew up in Kynesville. She was a graduate of Marianna High School, and attended Florida State University. She spent the majority of her life in Tallahassee, raising her two wonderful sons. Frances worked at Sears for many years until her retirement. A gifted seamstress and quilter, she also discovered ballroom dancing after retirement. The lights of her life, however, were her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her mother and father, Mrs. Zawada was predeceased by her brothers, Otis Cogburn, Wesley Cogburn, Charles Cogburn, her sister, Shirley Cogburn, and her beloved son, Richard Zawada.

She is survived by her son, Jeffrey A. Zawada, grandchildren, Anne Frances Zawada, Jeffrey A. Zawada, Jr., and Richard Addison Zawada, Jr., and her daughter in law, Cullen Zawada, and her brother, W.A. Cogburn, Jr.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, June 3, 2017 at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, or the charity of one’s choice.

Travis Taylor Ham, age 28 of Chipley, passed from this life on May 28, 2017.

Travis was born on November 29, 1988 in Dothan, Alabama to Robert C. Ham and Mary Harris. He was a graduate of Cottondale High School and worked as a Corrections officer at Northwest Florida Reception Center in Greenhead.

He is survived by his significant other, Kristina Hodges of Chipley, Florida; father: Robert C. Ham and wife Maria of Malone, Florida; mother: Mary Harris of Wausau, Florida; two sons: Jeremiah and Jaran of Chipley, Florida; daughter: Scarlett of Chipley, Florida; paternal grandmother: Frances Baxter of Chipley, Florida; brother:  Lance Hutchins of Wausau, Florida; sisters: Amber Register and husband Robert of Graceville, Florida, Alida Ham of Malone, Florida, Carlotta Kornegay and husband Jacob of Marianna, Florida.

A celebration of life will be held 7P.M. Friday, June 2, 2017 at Grace and Glory Worship Center in Chipley, Florida. The family will receive friend for visitation from 5-7P.M. at the church. Obert Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida directing
