James H. (Pete) Sims

James H. (Pete) Sims, 84, of Marianna, died Monday, February 13, 2017 at his home.

Pete was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County where he was self-employed as a farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean conflict and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry D. and Edna Sims; daughter, Sue Ellen Sims White; sister, Doris Schuler and brother, Henry E. Sims.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Carolyn; two sons, Petey and wife, Liz, Mark and wife, Lori all of Marianna; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, February 16, 2017 at The Church of Jesus Chris of Latter-Day Saints with Bishop Mark Sims officiating. Interment will follow at Sink Creek Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until funeral time at the Church.

Paulette Louise Watson age 59 of Fountain passed away on Monday, February 13, 2017 in Jackson Hospital. She was born in Iron Mountain, Michigan on September 2, 1957 to the late Paul Keep and Eloise Fiester Keep.

Paulette was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. She is survived by her husband Mark E. Watson; two children Candy Groves and Keith Smith; step-sons, Clinton Watson and Justin Watson; fourteen brothers & sisters, seven nieces and nephews, three grandchildren and four great nieces.

Funeral services for Paulette will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 in the Marianna Chapel Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Michael James McHan, 27 of Graceville passed away, Tuesday, February 14, 2017.

Michael was born in Snellville, GA on August 10, 1989. A graduate of Graceville High School Class of 2007, Michael received his AA in Criminal Justice from Chipola College. He was Assistant Manager at Grease Pro in Chipley, FL and a member of New Home Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2017 at New Home Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery with James & Lipford Funeral Home in Graceville directing.

Family will receive friends at the church Friday,1 p.m. until time of service.

Survived by his wife Cassie McHan; two sons Kolbi James McHan, Max Kaiden McHan; parents, Melanie and Jeff Baker, Mike McHan; grandparents James and Susie Calloway, Herta McHan, Sara Brannon; siblings Kristi (Brad) Garrett, Michael D. William Howard McDonald, Jr.

William Howard McDonald, Jr., 78, of Marianna died Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Jackson Hospital.

He was born November 3, 1937 in Geneva, Al to the late, William Howard McDonald, Sr. and Bonnie Emerson. William was known to most as Mr. “Zeco”. He served in the US Navy and was a very hard-working man.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Donna Rae McDonald.  William is survived by two daughters, Rhonda Akins of Laporte, TX,  Janet McDonald and one son, William Howard McDonald, III both from Greenwood; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr. McDonald will be at 1 p.m. Monday, February 20, 2017 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel. The family invites all who knew him to come and help celebrate his life.

Elizabeth “Debbie” Buchanan

Elizabeth “Debbie” Buchanan was born July 27, 1925 in Manor, Georgia to the now late Willie Scott and Ethel Venters.  She passed away February 10, 2017 in Tallahassee at the age of 91.

Debbie as she was most affectionately known. Was a long time resident of Franklin county before moving to Marianna. She worked at Brown Elementary; was an Eastern Star; and a faithful member of the Eastpoint Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Scott Buchanan (wife, Sherrie); daughter, Pattie Peacock; five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held February 14, 2017 at Magnolia Cemetery in Apalachicola with Rev. George Schmidt officiating.

Mr. Kelvin Thornton of Marianna, FL transitioned from life temporal to life eternal on Wednesday, February 15, 2017.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at New Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Kevin Williams, Pastor, Rev. George Williams, Rev. Flavious Pittman, Rev. Joe Tripp Jr., and Rev. Ronnie Spears, officiating. 

Interment will be in the Buckhorn Cemetery.

Vann Funeral Home will be in charge of the service.

Mr. Thornton will lie in repose at the church from 12:00 Noon until time for the service.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 24, 2017 from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Vann Funeral Home Chapel.

He leaves to cherish a lifetime of fond and precious memories, a loving family:

Tim David Lipford

Tim David Lipford

Tim David Lipford, age 60, of Dellwood, succumbed to cancer after a long five year battle at his home Saturday Febuary18, 2017. His cancer had gone into remission for three and a half years and it came back with a vengeance in March of 2016. Tim fought a long and hard battle, he gave his heart to Jesus in 2016 and was also baptized. He loved going to The Greenwood Baptist Church.

Tim greatly loved the outdoors. He was a devout hunter, fisherman and loved farming and growing things. He spent his life helping others, spent 16 years with Jackson County Fire and Rescue and after that, he earned his R.N. degree at Chipola College. He loved being in the medical field and above all, he loved his family and friends. Tim met the love of his life, Benita Wages on January 8, 2016 and fell head over heels in love with her. Tim said on many occasions, they did not have a lifetime together, but he loved her a lifetime.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Doris Lipford; his sister, Jaye Arlene Lipford Hall. Tim is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Benita Lipford; four sons, Jeremy David Lipford of Chattanooga, TN. James Walker and wife, Danielle of Gardner, TN, Jason Walker and wife, Tina of Fountain FL. and Bryan Thomason of Marianna FL; one brother, Ronald Lipford and wife, Lynn of Greenwood, FL; two sisters, Joyce Buchanan and husband, Paul of Lady Lakes, FL, Rita Millwood and husband, Jesse of Perry, GA; one brother-in-law, Bobby Hall of Grand Ridge, FL; six granddaughters, a special mention to Jamie and Holly, Grandpa loved you very much and always will. A special shout out to Cooper Lipford, Uncle Tim loved you very much. Tim also had several nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

Mary Mageline Traylor Fort passed away on Monday, February 20, 2017 at Signature Healthcare at the Courtyard after a lengthy illness. She was born to the late Leo George Traylor and Frances Ellen Dykes Traylor on October 14, 1923.

Mrs. Fort was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Charles E. Fort Jr.; brothers, L.B. Traylor, Armand Traylor, Leon Traylor, and James Traylor; sisters, Katherine Hansford and Carol Fester. She is survived by her daughters, Martha Espinoza (Roberto), Sybil Niemetz, Robin Hammermueller (Kurt); grandchildren, Melanie Maxham (Robert), Anthony Niemetz (Lynn), Tanya Niemetz-Lein (Toray), Jordan Hammermueller, and Hunter Hammermueller; great grandchildren, Taylor Niemetz, Cameryn Lein, and William Maxham.

Sarah Jane Basford age 61 of Marianna passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Jackson Hospital. She was born on November 4, 1955 in Marianna to the late James Otis and Jewette Basford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother Richard Basford.

Sarah is survived by her brother James Basford (Debbie), sister Brenda Miller, four nephews and one niece.

Services for Mrs. Basford will be Friday, February 24, 2017 in the Marianna Chapel Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. with Gary Wheeler officiating. Interment will follow in Dellwood Baptist Church Cemetery. Roger Owen Waters

Roger Owen Waters

Roger Owen Waters was born on September 14, 1929 in Normal, Illinois, and passed February 22, 2017 surrounded by his family in Jackson Hospital in Marianna, Florida.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Katherine Waters; sister, Dora Jean Kline; and brothers, Eldon Eugene and Clifford Harold Waters.  “Rogie” leaves behind his beloved wife of almost 61 years, Clara Beggs Waters.  

He is also survived by his children, Lana-Jean Rickman (Martin) who resides in Germany, Katherine Fay Waters Arbona, Janice Kay Waters Rabon (Carl), and Douglas Roger Waters and his wife, Kathy Scott Waters.  He was known as “Paw-Paw” to his grandchildren, Gregory Brent Arbona (Stephanie), Jennifer Ann Tipton (Shane), Stephanie Brooke Mathis (Jake), Amber Celeste Arbona, and Douglas Blake Waters (Grace).  He was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren, Hannah Faith Arbona, Isabella Maria Arbona, Jade Elizabeth Tipton, Sarah Grace Mathis, Clara Kate Mathis, Genevieve DuBray, Violette Amara Arbona, Veda Sage Tipton, and Anna-Claire Waters.  Roger will be missed by his four-legged couch buddies, Ladybug and Dolly.

Roger grew up in Normal, Illinois and joined the United States Army in 1946 and served as in Germany, Japan and Korea through 1954.  During his military service he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and earned two Army of Occupation Medals (Germany & Japan), World War II Victory Medal, Humane Action Medal with Airlift Device, Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.  He was Honorably Discharged in June of 1954.

Following his service in the army, he became a firefighter at Chicago State Hospital where he met his beautiful wife, Clara, and married in 1956.  They bought their first home in a suburb of Chicago in Wheeling, Illinois where they raised their family.  He retired from the Winnetka Fire Department just outside of Chicago after 20 years of service as a lieutenant.  He was the last man standing from his fire department unit. 

After his retirement, Roger and Clara moved to the panhandle of Florida where they had spent many family spring break vacations.  They bought their dream home on a 40-acre gentleman’s farm with a few head of cattle and a vegetable garden.  Roger enjoyed his cows, tinkering with electronics, woodworking, canoeing, and camping with his family.  In his later years, Rogie loved watching old television series like M.A.S.H. and Andy Griffith very loudly, was a crossword puzzle expert, and a lavish story teller.

Roger was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Marianna, Florida.

Arrangements are being made under the direction of James & Sikes Funeral Home, Marianna, FL for a private family ceremony.  

The family invites all friends and loved ones to celebrate Roger’s life on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the family’s farm [2886 Sycamore Rd., Alford, FL] during the hours of 2:00PM - 4:00PM.

Howard Hoyt Price

Howard Hoyt Price, 92, of River Landing, Colfax, North Carolina passed away peacefully on February 7, 2017 after a long and productive life.

Mr. Price was born April 30, 1924 in Lebanon, Tennessee to Perry and Ferol (Williams) Price. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 86th infantry on Luzon in the Philippine Islands. After the war, Mr. Price graduated from Cumberland University, received his Master’s Degree from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development, and completed additional studies at Vanderbilt University and Florida State University.  

His most treasured journey of being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather began with his marriage to Roberta (Bryan) Price in Jacksonville, Florida, 1951.

Mr. Price launched his professional career in Tallahassee, Florida, and spent ten years as Associate Registrar at Florida State University. He later moved to Greensboro, North Carolina to serve twenty-seven years as Registrar of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Throughout his career, he was active in regional and national Associations of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, association for professional educators.

A lifelong educator and administrator, Mr. Price relished the guidance aspects of his work as much as the technical aspects. Working with young people in a university environment, helping to direct them toward a productive future, gave meaning to his work and his life. He took great satisfaction in serving on multiple scholarship committees and assisting students in achieving their goals.

Mr. Price contributed his time and talents for 33 years as a member of the Gate City and Marianna Kiwanis Clubs, and enjoyed the years he spent as adviser of the Key Club at Grimsley High School.

Mr. Price was an active member of First Baptist Church, Greensboro, where he served as a deacon for many years. After retiring to Marianna, FL, and Dothan, AL, he served in multiple capacities as a member of the local First United Methodist Churches. He and Mrs. Price became congregants of Christ United Methodist Church when they moved back to Greensboro to be closer to family and friends.

He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Roberta Bryan Price, and survived by his daughters, Paula Farr of Raleigh, NC, and Joan and (Bernie) Keele of St. Simons Island, GA; grandsons, Bryan Farr and Clayton Farr, both of Raleigh, NC, and Wesley (Holly) Keele of Miami, FL; great-grandson, Parker Keele; and sister, Ruth (Jim) Baker of Sevierville, Tennessee.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2017 in Greenwood First Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Nathan Attwood officiating, James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

Mary Elizabeth Snelgrove

Mary Elizabeth Snelgrove, age 80, of Monticello, Florida passed away on Thursday February 23, 2017. She was born in Panama City, graduated from Marianna High School, was a Red Cross certified life guard, and also taught swimming lessons. Mary was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Monticello. She served many years on the church vestry and was a Lay Reader. She was the first female in Florida to receive Appointment of Lay Reader from the Diocese of Florida. She was also the first female member of the Kiwanis Club of Monticello. Mary worked for Steve Andris at the Jefferson County Kennel Club as Office Manager for over 40 years. She loved entertaining, adventure and was an avid card player. She had a jubilant personality and a wonderful sense of humor. Mary was a loyal and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, parishioner and friend, who was loved by all.

She is survived by her daughters; Miriam Elizabeth Bradley of Tomball, TX and Melinda (Mendy) Lee Simmons of Monticello, FL; her son, Paul Allen Snelgrove (Gail) of Marianna, FL; her granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Rosenshein (Jon) of Chipley, FL; her grandsons, Jesse Allen Snelgrove (Kristina) of Marianna, FL and Carl Allen Bradley of Chipley, FL; her great-grandsons, Waylon Cole Snelgrove of Marianna, FL and Jacob Allen Snelgrove of Marianna, FL; her great-granddaughter, Holly Elizabeth Snelgrove of Marianna, FL; her sister Dorothy Ann Baxter of Marianna, FL; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son; William (Bill Bill) David Snelgrove and her grandsons; Dustin Groom Simmons and Jake Hunter Snelgrove.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday March 2, 2017 at 11:00 at Christ Episcopal Church in Monticello with internment at the church memorial garden. Donald Alvin Shepard

Donald Alvin Shepard

Donald Alvin Shepard was born in Clearwater, Florida on January 31, 1935.  He graduated from Largo High School in 1953.  He joined the Army in 1954, serving decorated tours in Korea, Japan, Germany, and Vietnam with his Post Station being Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He retired from the Army in 1974 and moved to Micanopy, Fl.  He went to Santa Fa College studying Horticulture and Farm Management, graduating with a 4.0 GPA.  He had been a local resident since 2002, a longtime member of Sneads First United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 241.  He enjoyed spending time with family, traveling and wood carving.

He is survived by his precious wife of 43 years Marjorie Ann Edwards Wray Shepard; one daughter, Deborah Lee Shepard Gillispie; one son, Charles Allen Wray and wife Edith Wray; two sisters, Carol Shepard Russell and husband Eldon and Willie May Shepard; three brothers, Ralph Shepard, Sam Shepard and wife Sue, and David Shepard; five grandchildren, Daniel, Devon, Emily, Melissa, Alex and four great grandchildren.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents Samuel I. and Elva Mae Shepard and a sister Betty Joe Shepard Strickland.

Visitation with the family will be held Sunday, February 26, 2017 from 4:00 until 6:00 PM CST at Lanier – Andler Funeral Home with Funeral Services on Monday, February 27, 2017 at 2:30 PM CST at Sneads First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Ernie Gray officiating.  Interment will follow at Pope Cemetery in Sneads, Florida.   

The American Legion will perform full military honors.

Sara Melba Stokes Bryan

Sara Melba Stokes Bryan, age 88 of Graceville, FL passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2017. 

She was born in Holmes County, Florida on March 5, 1928 to Henry Grady & Ruby McIntosh Stokes. Melba was a 1947 graduate of Graceville High School. In 1947 she was a member of the first class at Chipola Junior College and attended Troy State College graduating in 1954 with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education. She started her teaching career in 1954. She taught at Poplar Springs High School from 1954 to 1957 and Bethlehem High School from 1958 to 1960. Melba returned to Poplar Springs High School in 1960 and continued until 1964. In 1964 she transferred to Graceville High School where she taught fifth grade until her retirement in 1983.

She had been a member of The First Baptist Church of Graceville for over 75 years. Melba was a member of the West Jackson County Retired Educators, the American Legion Auxiliary Post #42, a charter member of the Graceville Lioness Club, and a charter member of the Graceville Historical Society. She enjoyed crocheting, camping, going to the mountains, going to St. George Island, and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother-in-law Nelle and Harry Landrum, and one brother Charles Stokes.

Melba is survived by her husband of 62 years Aubry Lawrence Bryan of Graceville, FL, daughter Jennifer Patricia Bryan of Graceville, FL, son Kenneth Lawrence Bryan (Penny) of Alford, FL, daughter-in-law Jamie Sullivan Bryan of Graceville, FL, grandchildren Savanna Faye Lane (Jay) of Chipley, FL, Sara Abigail Bryan of Graceville, FL, Kaylyn & Sydney Hagan of Alford, FL, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong family and friends. 

The family would like to thank Dr. Steve Davis, Campbellton-Graceville Hospital and Covenant Care (Hospice) and staff for the wonderful loving care that they gave our loved one.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M., on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Graceville, FL. Funeral service will be following visitation with Pastor Tim Folds officiating. Interment will follow in Marvin Chapel Cemetery.

Sydney Blaire Holland

Sydney Blaire Holland age 18 of Marianna passed away on Sunday, February 26, 2017. Sydney was born on July 20, 1998 in Dothan, Al and was a lifelong resident of Marianna.  She graduated from Marianna High School in 2016. Sydney was currently enrolled at Chipola College in the nursing program where she had recently earned her AA Degree in December. She was of the Baptist faith and worked at Paramore’s Pharmacy in Marianna.  

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother Margaret Walker, great maternal grandmother Hazel Lord, and her paternal grandfather Earl Holland.

Sydney is survived by her loving parents Jeffrey Paul and Stacey Holland of Marianna, paternal grandmother Bernice Holland of Marianna, her sister Kristen Holland of Marianna and nephew Branson.

Funeral services for Sydney will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Rivertown Community Church in Marianna with Pastor Brandon Griffin and Pastor Paul Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Sims Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, family has asked that donations be made to the “Sydney Holland Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund” at Chipola Foundation, 3094 Indian Circle, Marianna, Florida 32446.

Mr. Jimmie Davis, of Malone, FL transitioned from life temporal to life eternal on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at the Marianna Convalescent Center.  

Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 3, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at New Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church 5239 Liberty Hill Road Bascom, FL 32423 with Elder Dr. Nelson Wilson, Pastor officiating.  

Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Vann Funeral Home will be in charge of the service.

Mr. Davis will lie in state at the church from 12:00 Noon until time for the service.

The viewing will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Vann Funeral Home.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories, a loving and devoted family:

Two Sons: Jimmie Davis Jr. (Lillian) of Tacoma, WA and Clyde Davis Sr. of Malone, FL

Two Daughters:  Clara Hunter (Ray) of Donaldsonville, GA and Joyce Smith of Malone, FL

Brother: Deacon J.W. Bowers of Leesburg, FL

Sister: Mary Ann Adolphus of Leesburg, FL

Mother-in-Law: Eldorado Smith of Bascom, FL

Two Sisters-in-Law: Linda Barnes (George) of Bascom, FL and Vennie Smith of Richmond, VA

Two Brothers-in-Law: George Smith (Thelma) and Joe Smith (Rose), both of Rochester, NY

Ten Grandchildren, twelve Great Grandchildren and one Great, Great Grandchild

And a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many dear friends

Mr. Larry Key, age 53, of Malone, Florida went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at the Bay Medical Hospice Unit in Panama City, Florida.

He is survived by his sister and brothers, Gloria Key Dickens, Willie James Kirkland and Stanley Key; aunt and uncles: Mervin Gibson and Elder Kenneth (Sallie Merle) Gibson; other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, March 3, 2017, 3-7 PM at the funeral home.

Funeral services will 11 AM, Saturday, March 4, 2017, in the M. Sue & Rodney D. Pittman Memorial Chapel, 5441 Cooper Street, (located at the funeral home) Graceville, FL with Pastor T. Olds officiating.

He will be laid to rest in the Saint John Cemetery, Slocomb (Countyline Community) Alabama under the directions of Christian Memorial Chapel of Graceville, FL.

Galitan Monroe “Joe” Canman, Jr., 71, of Malone died Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Bay Medical Center. 

Joe was a Staff Sergeant in the US Army where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He enjoyed spending time golfing and squirrel watching, but loved spending time with his granddaughter, Bayla and the rest of the family. Joe was also the former Governor of the Moose Lodge. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Galitan Monroe Canman, Sr. and Dorothy DeRoche Canman; one grandson, Anthony Canman. He is survived by three sons, Warren and Josh Canman both of Malone and Richard Canman of Monrovia ,CA; two daughters, Vicki Canman of Malone and Paula Guenat of Boise, ID; two sisters, Cindy Ellis of Malone and Lynn Chacon of California; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Graveside funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with Rev. Greg Roberts officiating and full military honors given by Sneads American Legion Post 241.  James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel will direct.
